The Eleksa CityBug was recently homologated for the local market and registered on the Natis system, making it South Africa’s cheapest electric vehicle (EV) at a price of R230,000.

The CityBug went on sale to the public in December and has already found a few new owners.

The small Electric Vehicle is classified as an “ideal city or town runabout”, with low running costs garnering interest from individuals and businesses alike.

The CityBug is already on sale in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Uruguay under various names, and can be bought in South Africa directly from Eleksa.

CityBug Electric Vehicle specs

The Eleksa CityBug is a small Electric Vehicle measuring 2,960mm long, 1,480mm wide, and 1,520mm tall, and weighing approximately 450kg.

It’s powered by a 9kWh battery and 4kW electric motor mounted to the rear axle, boasting a driving range of 100km. This can be extended to 200km at the customer’s request.

The CityBug then reaches a top speed of 60km/h, while charging costs come in at roughly 15c per kilometre. A full charge is expected to cost R15, said the company.

Despite its tiny dimensions the CityBug still offers four seats, and its maximum load capacity is rated at a respectable 300kg when the rear bench is folded flat.

A maximum incline scalability of 11.31 degrees is possible, too.

CityBug features

Inside the cabin, the CityBug is generously equipped for its entry-level status.

Standard equipment includes artificial leather seats with contrast stitching, air conditioning, central locking, electric windows, a digital instrument cluster, and an Android tablet infotainment system with USB inputs, Google Maps, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Furthermore, lifting the centre console lid reveals a big red cut-off switch in case you’d like the CityBug to stop power delivery completely.

The EV sports 12-inch alloy wheels, while four exterior colours are currently available – Blue, Red, White, and Yellow.

Price

The Eleksa CityBug has a South African starting price of R230,000.
