Lexus South Africa has announced its commitment to the brand’s Electrified Vision by confirming the upcoming launch of the RZ 450e, an electric vehicle, in the country during the first quarter of 2024.
Following the introduction of the UX 300e in 2001, the RZ will be the second emission-free Lexus model to be unveiled. Additionally, the automaker plans to introduce eight more electric vehicles (EVs) by 2025.
In line with its global strategy, Lexus aims to achieve a complete lineup of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in all vehicle categories by 2030. By 2035, the luxury carmaker aims to exclusively sell 100% BEVs worldwide, contributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
The RZ 450e boasts the latest-generation electric powertrain from Lexus, featuring twin “e-Axles” and Direct4 all-wheel drive. The e-Axles consist of an electric motor, gearing, and a Power Control Unit (PCU) that dynamically distributes power to each individual wheel while in motion. The Direct4 system continuously analyzes vehicle speed, steering angle, and G-forces to optimize motor torque distribution.
With these technological advancements, the RZ retains the iconic Lexus elements that customers appreciate while offering zero exhaust emissions, aligning with the brand’s commitment to sustainability.
In South Africa, the RZ will be equipped with a 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery, powering the twin e-Axles that deliver 230kW and 435Nm of torque to all four wheels.
With a driving range exceeding 400km, the RZ offers impressive performance. It will be one of the fastest Lexus models available in the country, accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds and reaching a top speed of 160km/h.
In other markets like the US, the RZ is available in Premium and Luxury trim levels, offering desirable features such as a 14-inch media hub, an intelligent voice assistant, bio-based upholstery in various color combinations, dynamic cruise control, and lane-trace assist as standard across all models.
It’s important to note that pricing and specifications for the RZ 450e in South Africa have yet to be announced. Lexus will share details regarding the available model grades and local pricing closer to the launch date.
